About the Cemetery
In July 1867 the Government Gazette announced the first three trustees for the land which had been put aside in March of that year.
In August 1914 the Government Gazette announced the approval of the application for a further two acres to be reserved, and by 1918 the blocks were purchased and being used.
Sometime in the 1950’s most the cemetery records were lost. The Trust held one map until a few years ago when an old map was re-discovered, this map helped locate some of the unmarked graves.
In the 1970’s the lawn section was created, then the niche wall for ashes and the memorial rose garden in 1999. The Dorothy Drysdale memorial garden was built in 2006.
A second lawn section was created in 2019 and in 2020 a babies section and another rose garden were developed.
The local community has always been a great supporter of the cemetery, as is displayed on the sign board inside the cemetery gates which thanks the many families who made donations towards the beautifying of the cemetery. The 2005 open day held by the Trust to involve and inform the community in future projects attracted many locals and inspired them to revamp their family graves.
The Broadford Cemetery has been managed by a Trust continually since its conception in 1867; the early Trustees consisting of representatives from each of the churches. These days Trustees come from all walks of life, bringing their different skills and knowledge to the job.
